To create new global systems and institutions
that are democratically accountable, we don’t have to elect
anyone new, we just have to base those institutions on the parliaments
Here is how the issue agenda is organised on
the website. All of these
issues are being dealt with in one way or another by virtually all
parliaments.
We have focused first on what may be the most
critical area of all: ensuring a life-giving planet for our
children
Remember that last time the world was just 3
degrees hotter than today, the seas were 25 metres higher
This means storms, droughts, floods, rising
seas… And nobody knows just
how much hotter it’s going
to get
This isn’t a difficult
problem to solve. We have the
technology now for clean energy and energy efficiency. If it costs a little more,
which is debatable, better to spend a little more for our energy
than to lose our planet. The shortage
isn’t one of technical
solutions, it’s a
shortage of political will and political vision
We have to keep the remaining forests
intact. Losing the Amazon
alone could increase global temperatures by 2 degrees C. If that requires money, we should spend the money
We should organise 100 or more e-Parliament
hearings on climate change, to build a critical mass of legislators who are informed,
networked and ready to lead in their own parliaments.
This is no time for business as usual. We need a war mentality to deal
with climate change. When your country
is threatened, you do whatever it takes to defend yourself, no matter
what it takes. When Britain was under
threat in 1940, she turned [%] of her economy to arms production. We can shift to clean
energy with far less effort than that, if we just have the political
will.
